May 1, 1979 a dream became reality when Jocelyn & I, John Langendoen, started Willowbrook Nurseries. At first we rented 30 acres on Balfour Road in Fenwick, Ontario; we planted crops, started container growing and constructed a greenhouse on the property while still working other jobs.
In 1981 we purchased our first 10 acres and needed to hire. Rob Bouwers joined the Willowbrook Nurseries team in 1982 and is still here with us today working as a Sales Manager.
Four years past and we quit our other jobs and devoted all our time and energy to Willowbrook Nurseries.
In the summer of ’91 the opportunity to purchase 50 additional acres presented itself and we pounced on it; a second site for Willowbrook Nurseries began. Adjoining property came available and upon purchase we moved our primary location to 935 Victoria Avenue.
A state of the art office and shipping facility, equipped with 13 docks and a large enclosed warehouse, was built in February 2002 at this location. Today Willowbrook owns more than 150 acres, all dedicated to container grown nursery production.
Gradually Willowbrook Nurseries extended its sales territory from all of Ontario, into Quebec, all of eastern Canada, and the northeastern United States.
In 2005 Jocelyn was diagnosed with cancer. After undergoing surgery and treatments she was given a clean bill of health. In the fall of 2008, Jocelyn’s cancer returned, she underwent surgery and intensive treatment and fought a courageous battle. On January 22, 2009 the Lord in His infinite wisdom took Jocelyn home.
Since then our eldest son Chris has stepped up to be Vice President of the company and is steadily “pruning” me out of some of my responsibilities. He shares the dream that Jocelyn and I once had, which is to be leaders in the plant industry by providing excellent customer service, quality products and offering the newest and most innovative items in the market.
We are always approaching another anniversary and looking forward to a promising future of serving you, our valued customers.
